Golda Meir, Israel’s only woman prime minister and in her day, one of only two in the world, is beloved among American Jews.  However, she is quite unpopular among Israelis.   She is blamed for the near debacle of the Yom Kippur War, and for her poor treatment and handling of the Mizrachim that fled to Israel from Arab nations in the 1950s.   In the past few years, there has been a major re-evaluation of her contributions, and this biography is a key contribution to this reassessment.   As we approach the 50th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, this monumental (over 800 pages) and insightful biography of Golda’s life and work is an excellent way to reflect on the birth and growth of Israel and on the ways the Yom Kippur shattered many assumptions Israelis had.   Golda was a powerful woman, who fought for economic justice from the time she was a young girl in Milwaukee and through her creation of Social Security, National Health Care, Women Workers’ Rights, and much more.

You will need to buy and start reading it before the first class.
