Conversion

Judaism welcomes all those who find their spiritual home in our tradition and who wish to become part of the Jewish People. Temple Sinai offers a holistic program for those considering conversion to Judaism. Conversion is a personal decision and journey; therefore, the process will differ for each candidate, but the parts generally required in the process are explained below. At Temple Sinai, we enthusiastically welcome all those choosing to become Jewish into our community.

Summary of the Conversion Process

1. Enrollment in our Introduction to Judaism course
This 15-week course, taught by our rabbi and part of the Union of Reform Judaism’s curriculum, is interactive and experiential. It covers the foundations of Judaism: holidays, history, prayer, theology, and life cycle. The course is typically offered once a year.

We are so happy that you are embarking on this journey into Judaism.  We want to support you as best we can but unfortunately, we are not having a conversion class in the spring of 2025.  There may be one in the fall or winter but it has not been decided yet. We recommend you take the URJ Intro to Judasim Class online and encourage you to attend services and social events here and other places so you can get to know the Jewish world. Check out our events calendar to see what is going on!

2. Meetings with Rabbi
These are small group meetings to enable the exploration of your questions. Once you have completed your Introduction to Judaism course, please email our Executive Assistant to set up meetings with the Rabbi.

3. Bet Din and Mikveh
bet din (rabbinic court) will be assembled on the day of your conversion followed by a visit to the mikveh (ritual bath typically in Lake Champlain during the warmer months).
